Where does the word Qurbani come from and what does the tradition signify?

Qurbani and Qurban are words that originate from Qurb which means “closeness”. The prophet Ibrahim (AS) intended to abide by Allah (SWT) when instructed to sacrifice the most precious thing in his life. He broke down at this command as he knew that he loved his child the most out of all.

However, his devotion to Allah(SWT) was monumental and he would have sacrificed his child if Allah(SWT) had not sent an alternative creature to sacrifice.

Ibrahim (AS) showed devotion and iman that we are expected to show and Eid Ul Adha is a reminder that you have to sharpen your mind and iman. You have to sacrifice what is worth true value to you so that it impacts society.

• ‘And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision”. Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial and We ransomed him with a great sacrifice’. Qur’an [37:103-107]

When is Qurbani and what do Bangladeshis do during the occasion?

The month of pilgrimage is when you are to sacrifice livestock depending on your wealth. And the meat is to be shared with people all around you, especially those who are needy.

The month of pilgrimage is known as Dhul Hijjah. We celebrate Eid Ul Adha From the tenth to the thirteenth day of Dhul Hijjah. This is a very special time for the children. Traditionally, in Bangladesh, the children buy new clothes to dress up in so that they can go out and hang out with their friends after the morning prayer and Qurbani are over. Once the meat is prepared, a grand feast takes place with the attendance of family and friends.

Underprivileged communities in Bangladesh have a lovely time too. They go from house to house and collect sacrificial meat for family meals that will last for a few days. The children celebrate during this time as Allah (SWT) excuses them from the struggle of poverty and hunger for a few days.

• “Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives, and the fruits of your toil. But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who say, when afflicted with calamity, ‘To Allah, we belong, and to Him is our return.’ They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance.” Quran [2:155-157]
